"My son is a communicative person. He would tell us if he was going to come home late or if he had gigs because he's a DJ. But he didn't call after he left for work. That's when we panicked. We tried calling him, but his phone was off. This is terrifying.”

Fikile said the family had no knowledge of anyone who harboured ill feelings towards Sanele. After searching thoroughly in all the places they thought he might be, they eventually went to the police on Monday, 7 September, to formally report him missing.

Beyond deejaying on the side, Sanele was employed as a call centre agent. His mother said the ordeal has taken a heavy toll on her. She added:

"I can't sleep because I don't know what happened to him. But I pray every day for his safe return.”
