Tragic Accident in Mtubatuba Claims 11 After Collision Between Minibus Taxi and Sugarcane Truck

KWAZULU-NATAL — Eleven people have died, and up to nine others sustained critical injuries after a minibus taxi and an articulated truck transporting sugarcane collided head-on along the N2 highway near Mtubatuba in northern KwaZulu-Natal in the early hours of Sunday, 27 September 2026.

The collision took place at roughly 4:00 AM close to the Nkwiliza Bridge in the Nkodibe/KwaManandi area. The passengers aboard the Toyota Quantum minibus taxi were returning from a Maskandi music festival, travelling back toward Mtubatuba and Big Five Hlabisa, when the taxi struck a southbound truck en route to the uMfolozi sugar mill.

Taxi engulfed in flames after impact

The force of the head-on crash caused the minibus taxi to catch fire. All eleven fatalities occurred at the scene. Survivors were transported to nearby hospitals with severe burn wounds.

Both lanes of the N2 remained closed throughout Sunday as the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), forensic teams, and emergency personnel worked to clear the wreckage and conduct preliminary investigations at the scene.

Officials urge caution on the roads

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli and Transport MEC Siboniso Duma both conveyed their condolences to the families of those who perished. Premier Ntuli appealed to motorists to be especially vigilant during early morning hours, citing driver fatigue as a serious risk, and issued a strong warning against getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol.

The South African Police Service and local traffic authorities have opened a formal investigation to establish the exact cause and sequence of events leading to the crash.
