UFC Middleweight Champion Sean Strickland has been injured in a serious vehicle accident, disclosing the incident to his followers through a series of Instagram posts on Tuesday 22 September 2026.

Strickland was with friends, including fellow fighter Anthony Hernandez, when a vehicle driven by his friend Chris Cornell flipped approximately six times at around 60mph. At the time of the crash, Strickland was not wearing a helmet.
Strickland describes the crash
In a video posted to his Instagram account, Strickland appeared visibly shaken as he showed injuries to his head and shoulder following the crash.

"Guys, I'm in a real bad place," Strickland said.
"I let my buddy [Chris Cornell] drive, he rolled, we were going like 60mph, we rolled like six times."
He acknowledged the risk of going helmet-free, saying:
"I didn't have a helmet on. I'm an idiot. That was just from rolling and smacking the dirt. I'm just gonna lay here and take a nap for a little bit. Sleep it off."
In a subsequent Instagram story, Strickland confirmed he was concussed but was quick to distance himself from any blame for the accident.
"I hit the ground like six times, [but] I'm good, bro, I'm sparring tomorrow. I'm a little concussed. I was not driving. I was not in control of the vehicle. When we rolled, it wasn't my fault," he wrote.

Friend hospitalised with broken collarbone
Strickland later shared a photo of Cornell in hospital, where the driver appeared to have sustained a broken collarbone as a result of the crash. Despite the severity of the incident, Strickland told fans it had been one of the more memorable experiences he had had in some time.
The 35-year-old champion holds the UFC Middleweight title and most recently defended it with a victory over Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 328.
He won the 185-pound belt in September 2023, then lost it in his first title defence against former champion Dricus Du Plessis in January 2024. The fact that Chimaev was dethroned by a fighter previously beaten by Du Plessis could serve as encouragement for the South African star in his pursuit of reclaiming the title.
