A Canadian musician came home from South Africa and got straight to work building something that felt like home.

"You really are South African." The musician's response? A simple, proud "Lekker, man."

From SA tour to backyard braai

The band's love for South Africa runs deep. Neon Dreams first came to the country in May 2021, becoming the first international act to tour South Africa after the COVID-19 pandemic. Every show on their 16-date tour sold out. The duo fell so hard for the culture, the people and the food that they eventually made Cape Town a home base, splitting time between Canada and South Africa for years.

During their time in SA, they collaborated with local artists including Matthew Mole, Majozi and Mthandazo Gatya, and performed at iconic venues like the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts. Their 2019 single Life Without Fantasies had gone platinum in South Africa without any promotion from the band, sparking the connection that changed everything.

The braai station is the latest and perhaps most personal expression of that bond.
