A night meant to celebrate the end of a school chapter turned into an alarming scene at Avianto Hotel in Muldersdrift, Johannesburg. The Grade 12 farewell for Roosevelt High School was cut short after multiple learners arrived visibly intoxicated on alcohol and drugs, triggering chaos that forced an early end to the event.

The situation quickly escalated beyond rowdy behaviour. Intoxicated students drove recklessly into the venue during arrivals, and staff members were reportedly threatened with a firearm. The disruption caused significant property mess and left the function in a state that could no longer be managed safely.

Venter called in on a sick day

Principal Cristèl Venter was not present at the start of the evening due to illness, but was called in to intervene as the situation worsened. She made the decision to shut the dance down entirely in order to protect the safety of everyone present.

Her intervention did not go without pushback. Parents who confronted her during the shutdown responded with verbal abuse, adding to an already tense environment.

Following the incident, Venter issued a public statement condemning the learners' behaviour. The school confirmed it would be launching a formal investigation to identify those responsible, with disciplinary steps to follow in line with due process.

Calls to rethink the matric dance tradition

The school's response extended beyond internal discipline. Roosevelt High also shared commentary from podcaster Penuel Mlotshwa, who used the incident to call for a broader rethink of how matric dances are organised in South Africa.

Mlotshwa pointed to the financial pressure that these events place on families, with parents spending heavily on elaborate outfits, hired vehicles and pre-dance parades. He proposed that schools consider replacing expensive off-site venues with farewell events held on school grounds, during regular hours, and in standard school uniform, arguing it would ease the burden on families while making the occasions safer and more manageable.

The incident has reignited debate about how matric celebrations are structured and whether the current format serves students and their families well.
