Cape Town has taken a major step in its battle against crime. On 8 October 2026, the City of Cape Town officially launched a brand new SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team alongside a dedicated aerial drone unit, signalling a significant expansion of the city's law enforcement capabilities.
The launch was announced by Democratic Alliance leader and mayor of Cape Town Geordin Hill Lewis in a video filmed at what appeared to be a law enforcement facility in Cape Town. In the clip, officials, officers, a drone in flight and marine vessels were all visible, capturing the scale of the new operation.
What Cape Town's new SWAT unit will do
According to the announcement, the SWAT team will be deployed across Cape Town to respond to gang-related incidents, hostage situations and violent crime. The unit will also target smash-and-grab hotspots, which have long been a concern for commuters and motorists in the city.

Alongside the SWAT team, a marine unit forms part of the broader deployment, with specialist kit already on the ground. The drone aerial unit will work in tandem with officers on the ground, providing real-time aerial support during operations.
The city confirmed that both units will work closely with the South African Police Service to strengthen policing across Cape Town's communities.
Looking ahead, the city indicated plans to establish a Metro Police Detective Unit and continue pushing for greater powers to investigate crime independently.
