A video of an African American man grappling with South Africa's chilly weather has gone viral on Facebook, after his candid and comedic reaction struck a nerve with viewers across the continent.
On a South African city street, in the video, shared by the page I Love Africa on 25 October 2026, the man delivers his bewilderment directly to the camera. He questions everything he thought he knew about the continent, saying he always assumed Africa was defined by heat and intense sunlight, given that Black people are understood to have evolved in warm, tropical environments. Finding himself cold on African soil, he jokes about whether he has misunderstood what it means to be Black altogether.
"I thought that we evolved from warm tropical environments and our skin has adapted to a higher concentration of sunlight. But here I am in actual Africa and it's freezing."

The video touched on a misconception that many people hold about Africa, namely that the continent is uniformly hot. In reality, Africa's climates are remarkably diverse, spanning tropical forests, arid deserts, temperate zones, and regions that regularly experience snowfall and near-freezing temperatures, particularly in southern parts of the continent during winter months.
The comment section quickly became a geography lesson of sorts. Pumba Muundjua wrote:
"Clearly didn't pay attention in the Geography classes."
Steve Eyezstayred Lingo kept it brief:
"It's called geography."
Steff Samiere asked simply:
"Ever heard of the equator?"
Mike Nyati summed it up plainly:
"Seasons... It's called seasons. We have all 4 in SA."
