SA rallies behind single dad Sidney Hill

Sidney Hill, a single father from South Africa, is at the centre of a nationwide outpouring of support after surviving a terrifying hijacking and shooting incident that left him and his children shaken and facing serious financial strain.

A crowdfunding campaign titled "Help Sidney Hill and His Children Rebuild" was launched to assist the family with two pressing needs: legal costs stemming from the incident and ongoing professional trauma counselling for the children. The campaign has already raised R321 420.

Because Sidney is raising his children alone, the sudden and unexpected expenses hit especially hard. The full extent of the legal costs and how long the children will need counselling remain unknown, making every donation count.

Donations pour in from across the country

By 26 October 2026, South Africans from Johannesburg and beyond had already begun contributing, with donations ranging from R20 to R500. Many donors left messages of encouragement alongside their contributions.

One anonymous donor wrote:

"You faced what we all fear most, and your courage in protecting your family is inspiring. A good day for the good guys."

Another said in Afrikaans:

"Baie sterkte vir jou en jou familie. Jy was so so braaf!" (Stay strong, you and your family. You were so, so brave!)

A donor from Johannesburg signed off simply:

"Speedy recovery to you and yours! JR / Johannesburg."

Others kept their words brief but warm.

"You are not alone."

Another offered:

"We are behind you!"

The campaign organisers have encouraged those who cannot donate financially to share the campaign with friends, family and their wider communities, noting that spreading the word can be just as valuable as a monetary contribution. The goal is to give Sidney and his children the breathing room they need to focus on healing.
