A single father from Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal, is being carried through one of the darkest periods of his life by the generosity of hundreds of strangers, after a crowdfunding campaign set up in his name raised more than R258 000 in just three days.

Sidney Hill survived a shooting incident during a hijacking, an ordeal that left him with unexpected legal costs and his children in need of professional counselling to work through the trauma they experienced. As the sole parent responsible for his family, the financial weight of those additional demands quickly became unmanageable.

A BackaBuddy campaign was launched on his behalf, with a target of R500 000 to cover legal fees and fund as many counselling sessions as his children need. At the time of writing, it had already reached 52% of that goal, with 555 unique donors contributing.

The messages left by donors paint a picture of a community deeply moved by Hill's story. One donor, who identified themselves only as A Munsamy, shared a personal connection to the ordeal:

"I was recently hijacked and held up with guns a few days before your incident; going through this is truly traumatic. I pray God protects you and your family and helps you during this traumatic time. Thank you for your bravery; you didn't just save your family, you protected other families from going through the same thing."

An anonymous donor from what appears to be an agricultural security background also weighed in:

"My father works in agri security in KZN; I feel this in my bones. Please look after yourself and your children in the coming months."

Another donor offered a broader hope for Sidney's situation, writing:

"As a father and grandfather myself, I am very proud of you, Sidney. Hope someone takes on your case Pro Bono and you can do something beneficial for your family with the funds raised, and who knows, perhaps there's some extra to pay forward to the next family in a situation like this. We should have an ongoing fundraiser for people in this situation."

Donor S Reddy left a simple but pointed message alongside their contribution:

"Well done, you are a Hero."

The campaign organisers have been transparent that the total legal costs and the full duration of the children's counselling are still unknown, meaning the R500 000 target may not represent the ceiling of what the family ultimately needs. They have encouraged those who cannot donate financially to share the campaign within their networks.

The fund remains open with no set end date.
