A Stellenbosch club turned exam season on its head by making partygoers hit the books before they could hit the dancefloor.

The concept was simple but unexpected. Chairs were moved into one of the town's most popular clubs, and every student who walked through the door on the night of 28 October 2026 had to complete a two-hour study session before the party could begin. The video showing how the night unfolded was shared on Instagram and quickly caught the attention of people far beyond Stellenbosch.

The person behind the idea, Tim Morrel, explained in the clip that Stellenbosch has a reputation as the party capital of South Africa. With exams looming, they felt something had to give. Rather than cancelling plans entirely, they found a middle ground.

Study first, then the DJ

Keeping a room full of students focused for two hours was always going to be a challenge. To help everyone push through, organisers handed out free sweets and Red Bulls to keep energy levels up. The effort worked well enough that by the time the DJs eventually came out, the crowd had earned every minute of what followed.
