“You Overlooked Many Red Flags”: SA Reacts to Mzansi Woman’s Tinder Date Robbery Story in Joburg

The man stood out from everyone else she had matched with on the app. While others flirted, he kept things grounded and serious, which quickly earned her trust. That trust would turn into a costly mistake.

After about a week, he asked her to move their conversations to WhatsApp. The dynamic shifted almost immediately, and the pressure to meet in person began building.

When gut feelings go ignored

Something kept telling her not to go, and she held that feeling for nearly two months. Eventually, the pressure wore her down, and she agreed to meet him on a Friday afternoon.

The original plan had him coming to her, but last-minute changes kept pushing the goalposts. She ended up making the trip alone by train from Pretoria all the way to Park Station.

The man she found waiting for her looked nothing like his photos. He was unrecognisable, and the situation quickly went from uncomfortable to dangerous.

He steered her away from the station toward a nearby motel, spinning a story about waiting for his cousin. Once inside, she felt trapped and genuinely feared for her safety.

He then asked to use her phone to call his cousin for directions, stepped into the corridor, and disappeared. Her phone was gone, and she was left stranded and alone in an unfamiliar part of Johannesburg.

Mzansi had a lot to say in the comments. One user named Pearl said she had been robbed in a similar situation twice. Tumisang_mskgobain said the story was reason enough to delete dating apps for good.
