JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) has its eyes set on all Gauteng metros after successfully removing the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) speaker Vasco Dama and Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse.

The spokesperson of the ANC in Gauteng, Lesego Makhubela said that the party seeks to regain control over The City of Tshwane and Ekurhuleni. The ANC believes that there is still strong constituent support for the party in the province, reported SABC News.

“The ANC will go and claim Ekurhuleni, the ANC will go and claim the City of Tshwane working with other parties to ensure that put a stable coalition government that will be put at the centre of its programme service delivery which will be able to help our people in all those cities and stablise the finances of all those cities which are in total collapse and disarray."

According to Times Live, the DA will not hand over the biggest metros in the country without a fight. They said they will start by going to the courts to overturn the decision to remove Mpho Phalatse as mayor by the ANC and other parties. DA leader John Steenhuizen said:

“We will move quickly to do everything in our power to protect our other coalition governments from this ANC onslaught and we urge our coalition partners to stand firm in this regard we will do everything we can to rescue failing governments from the ANC’s hand."

South Africans had this to say about the ANC targeting other Gauteng metros.

"The truth is that Jozi's biggest party is now back in the office. In all Gauteng metros, ANC received more votes than all other parties, but it failed to reach the threshold of 50% plus. Hence the DA and small parties ganged up against the ANC."

"Coalitions are bound to be weak when all executive positions go to the same party. If you need the minority to rule, share power effectively."

"Next time try harder to win elections outright. Spend DA time and money increasing your support base. Call off the attack pack against your former coalition partners for a start. I kind of think u will need them sooner or later."
