WESTERN CAPE – The South African Police Service is investigating whether a suspected extremist shot dead during a prolonged gun battle near Robertson was operating alone or had ties to a broader extremist network.

Western Cape police are probing the matter after a 40-year-old man was shot dead at a farm in De Hoop on Monday, 17 August 2026, following a standoff with police. One officer sustained a gunshot wound during the confrontation and is currently recovering in hospital.

Disturbing items seized at De Hoop Farm

Investigations have now taken a new turn after police discovered disturbing items at the scene. Among the items recovered at the scene were an old South African flag and a handwritten journal bearing the title "The Enemies of the Boer." Provincial Deputy Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, Bongani Maqhashalala, described the contents of the journal as deeply concerning.

Maqhashalala said the journal contains an extensive list of names of prominent South Africans, characterised within its pages as self-appointed enemies of the white race and individuals who "needed to be dealt with."

He confirmed that authorities are withholding those names for now, given that they span multiple provinces, and that releasing them could cause unnecessary public alarm.

Counterintelligence to be brought in

Maqhashalala also stated that investigators have not yet determined whether the suspect acted independently or as part of an organised group.

"It is the thing we are going to follow. We're going to engage counterintelligence. Because if you read the journal, you can see that he believes in extremism, but we are going to follow that up," he said.

The deputy commissioner's comments signal that the investigation is expected to extend well beyond the immediate incident, with authorities treating the journal as a significant lead in establishing the suspect's ideological connections and potential network.
