Cessna 172 Crash-Lands in Midrand Business Park After Engine Failure Near Grand Central Airport

GAUTENG — Engine failure could be the reason why an aircraft made an emergency landing in a Midrand business park on 8 September 2026 during a training flight near Grand Central Airport.

The Cessna 172, which had a student pilot and a flight instructor on board, was conducting circuit training patterns when the mechanical failure occurred. The crew executed a forced landing approximately 250 metres west of Runway 17, coming down between New Road and Old Pretoria Main Road. The impact left the aircraft destroyed and caused visible damage to the perimeter palisade fencing of the business park.

Injuries and fuel spill at crash site

Emergency personnel who arrived at the scene attended to at least one injured occupant. Responders spread sand across the surrounding roadway to contain fuel that had leaked from the wreckage, and the spill produced a strong odor throughout the area.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department closed the northbound carriageway between the two intersections in response to the crash. Traffic conditions in the area deteriorated further after a secondary vehicle collision occurred at the same location shortly afterwards.

Aviation authority sends investigators to Midrand

The South African Civil Aviation Authority's Accident and Incident Investigations Division has deployed a team to the scene to determine what caused the engine to fail. No cause had been confirmed at the time of publication.
