KWAZULU-NATAL — Two families from KwaZulu-Natal say attempts to help their sons overcome substance abuse ended in tragedy after both young men died months apart at the same discipline boot camp in Richmond.

SABC News journalist Gcinokuhle Malinga reported on 21 August 2026 that police are currently investigating five cases linked to the facility. Unathi Mkhasibe's parents told reporters that his substance abuse began while he was pursuing a civil engineering qualification in Johannesburg, where he became addicted to lean. He passed his first-semester coursework, but his academic performance deteriorated in his second semester, ultimately leading to his failure in the examinations despite strong continuous assessment marks.

Mkhasibe's decline and enrolment at boot camp

After returning home, Mkhasibe continued using substances, funding his habit through self-generated income and a Social Relief of Distress grant. He also smoked dagga during that period. Following three years at home and several unsuccessful treatment attempts, his parents made the decision to enrol him in the Richmond boot camp.

Zandile Luthuli, the mother of 23-year-old Mduduzi Luthuli, said the family has been unable to find closure following her son's death at the same boot camp in January 2026. Like Mkhasibe, Luthuli allegedly died after being assaulted when he tried to flee the facility.

Both mothers said they deeply regretted the decision to send their children to the camp, having believed it would help rather than harm them. Authorities have confirmed that five cases are under investigation in connection with the Richmond boot camp. The nature of those cases has not been fully detailed, but the deaths of both Mkhasibe and Luthuli are among the matters under scrutiny.
