JOHANNESBURG — Flames swept through the New Apostolic Church Towerby in the Johannesburg South District on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, leaving the structure severely damaged. No one was hurt in the blaze, and authorities have not yet established what started the fire.
The church released a public statement confirming that inspectors have declared the facility unsafe for occupancy.
"It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that our Towerby church building was unfortunately completely destroyed this afternoon due to a fire. The building is condemned and cannot be used in its current state," the leadership stated.
Sacristy Remains Intact
Despite widespread damage to the primary gathering space, the sacristy escaped major impact. Chalices for the Eucharist and Bibles kept inside that section survived without damage, which leadership pointed out in their message to the community.
