MPUMALANGA — Eight people, including two young children, died in a severe head-on crash along the N17 toll route near Ermelo in Mpumalanga during the early hours of 12 September 2026. The accident occurred after 21 people died when two taxis collided with a station wagon in the Western Cape.
The collision involved a Volkswagen sedan and a Toyota sedan at approximately 1:30 am. According to Mpumalanga Community Safety spokesperson Moeti Mmusi, seven of the deceased were travelling in the Volkswagen, while the driver of the Toyota—who was alone in the car—was also killed. No additional injuries were reported at the scene.
SAPS launches probe into the crash
Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation into the crash. While the precise cause remains under review, authorities indicated that reckless and negligent driving has not been ruled out.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie offered condolences to the victims' families and called on drivers to exercise heightened caution, particularly when visibility or road conditions worsen.
The deadly incident follows another severe collision in the province last month, where four people died on the N4 toll road near Rivulets after a truck collided with a minibus taxi towing a trailer.
