Taxi Boss Bafana Sindane Rushes to Gauteng High Court to Block Madlanga Commission Appearance

PRETORIA — Taxi boss Oupa "Bafana" Sindane turned to the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on 23 September 2026 to block his subpoenaed appearance before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which had scheduled his testimony for that same day.

Sindane's legal team filed an interdict to prevent both his appearance and the commission's use of phone content seized in connection with a pending extortion and money-laundering case in Kwaggafontein. Sources close to Sindane also cited his health as a factor, indicating he is not medically well.

Sibanyoni denies corrupt ties

Sindane's move follows the testimony of his associate, Joe "Ferrari" Sibanyoni, who last appeared before the commission on Monday. Sibanyoni denied any connection to corrupt police officers or to the hiring of hitmen. He did, however, acknowledge having what he described as brotherly relationships with certain police officers during his time on the stand.

Sibanyoni was also called upon to account for a statement attributed to him on 25 June 2025: "We are in charge of the streets." His legal team offered context around the remark, submitting that it should not be interpreted as a declaration of authority.

"Taken in isolation, it may appear alarming. In context, this was an expression that we are in charge of ourselves and out running on a daily. It's personal motivation of healthy lifestyle and nothing must be attributed to the statement," the submission read.

Sindane and Sibanyoni share the same legal representation and are co-accused in the extortion and money-laundering matter.

Commission probes taxi industry links

The Madlanga Commission continues to examine alleged connections between the taxi industry, a grouping referred to as the Big Five cartel, and political figures. Sindane's testimony was viewed as significant given his position within the industry and his association with Sibanyoni, whose evidence the commission has already heard.

With the high court application now in play, it remains to be seen when, or whether, Sindane will ultimately give evidence before the inquiry.

Sibanyoni and Sindane, two prominent taxi bosses, recently appeared before the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court alongside Mvimbi Masilela and Philemon Msiza. Following the court’s ruling to strike the matter from the roll, Sibanyoni and his co-accused celebrated inside and outside the courtroom. But celebrations did not end there.
