LIMPOPO — A police sergeant allegedly shot and killed a man during a road confrontation in Ga-Mashamothane on Sunday, 27 September 2026, before allegedly raping a teenage girl at his home and fatally turning his service firearm on himself.
According to IOL, Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said officers were called to the scene at approximately 3:30pm, where they found a 32-year-old man on the ground with gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services declared him dead at the scene.
Dispute on a narrow road
Preliminary information gathered by police indicates that the victim and the sergeant came into contact while travelling along a narrow road. A dispute broke out between the two, after which the officer allegedly opened fire with his service pistol and fled in his vehicle.

The sergeant allegedly had a 14-year-old girl with him at the time and drove with her to his home in Ga-Masha, in the Sekhukhune District. Ledwaba confirmed the teenager was allegedly raped at the officer's residence. Shortly afterwards, the sergeant allegedly shot himself with the same service firearm, dying from his injuries.
Commissioner condemns officer's conduct
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Jan Scheepers issued a strong condemnation of the incident, stressing that officers bear a special responsibility as armed representatives of the law.
"Police officers are entrusted with firearms and are expected to uphold and enforce the law," Scheepers said.
He added that any allegation of criminal conduct against a member of the service must be thoroughly investigated and resolved through the appropriate processes.
Police in Tubatse have opened cases of murder and rape, and an inquest has been initiated into the officer's death. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified and will assume responsibility for the further investigation.
The South African Police Service extended its condolences to the family of the deceased man and confirmed that the affected minor would receive the necessary support. Investigations into the full circumstances of the incident are ongoing.
Mpumalanga officer shoots girlfriend and himself
Previously, Briefly News reported that a policeman shot and killed his girlfriend, who was also an officer, before turning the gun on himself in Standerton, Mpumalanga. The on-duty officer from Val Police Station was on patrol when he allegedly spotted his girlfriend in a car with another man on 30 April 2024. According to @sa_crime, the officer confronted his off-duty girlfriend, which resulted in him shooting her multiple times.
