KwaZulu-Natal — A 24-year-old woman was found dead in an informal settlement in Canelands, KwaZulu-Natal, in the early hours of Saturday, 26 September 2026, with marks on her neck consistent with suspected strangulation.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance at approximately 03:32 and dispatched officers to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the woman's boyfriend sitting inside the room, visibly distressed and believed to be under the influence of alcohol. RUSA posted about the incident on their Facebook account.
What the boyfriend told officers
The boyfriend told responding officers that the couple had been drinking at a nearby tavern when a dispute broke out between them. He said the argument continued after they returned to his room, and that at some point the woman became weak and lay down on the bed.

RUSA paramedics examined the woman and confirmed she had died. In addition to the marks on her neck, marks were also noted on her breast. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened an investigation into the circumstances of her death.
Death follows spate of GBV killings in Ekurhuleni
The discovery in Canelands comes shortly after 10 women were found dead in Ekurhuleni in what authorities described as gender-based violence (GBV) incidents, heightening public concern over the safety of women across South Africa. GBV remains one of the country's most pressing social crises, with advocacy groups and government bodies repeatedly calling for stronger intervention and accountability measures to address the scale of violence directed at women.

Burnt body found in Delft
