Ekurhuleni Women Killings: Ninth Woman Found Dead in Dawn Park

GAUTENG — A ninth woman has been found dead in the Ekurhuleni area, deepening concern over what authorities describe as a troubling series of deaths involving women across the East Rand.

The victim, believed to be approximately 30 years old, was discovered in Dawn Park, Boksburg, on Wednesday, 17 September 2026. She was found naked, wrapped in a sheet, and appeared to have been dumped at the location. Police opened a murder case and launched an investigation.

Gauteng acting provincial commissioner Major General Fred Kekana confirmed the find at a media briefing, saying preliminary information indicated the body had been left at the spot where it was discovered.

Police examine possible link between cases

The Dawn Park discovery brings to nine the number of women found dead in and around Ekurhuleni since July 2026. Investigators are working to determine whether the deaths are connected, though police have not yet confirmed a single pattern across the cases.

The deaths have been recorded across several parts of the East Rand. On 15 July, a 37-year-old woman was found naked and bound with cable ties in an open field near the R21 in Kempton Park. Itumeleng Kekana, 32, went missing on 17 July and her body was later recovered near Great North Road in Pomona on 3 August. A further victim, aged 32, was found partially clothed near the R21 on 24 August.

Subsequent discoveries were made in Clayville, Olifantsfontein, Rhodesfield and KwaThema. Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, 38, was among those killed. The mother had set out for her regular run and did not return. Her partially clothed body was found behind a hotel in Rhodesfield. In Olifantsfontein, another woman was discovered bearing bruises, while a woman in her 30s was found behind Club 69 in KwaThema, Springs, where preliminary pathology results indicated she had been strangled.

Police urge Caution without restricting movement

Major General Kekana has called on women and girls to exercise caution, particularly when walking, running, or travelling alone, while making clear that the appeal is not intended to limit their freedom.

Police face increasing pressure to determine what links, if any, exist between the nine deaths and to bring those responsible to account.

Ekurhuleni lockdown announced

Previously, Briefly News reported that Ekurhuleni was on lockdown following an announcement by Gauteng's leadership led by Premier Panyaza Lesufi. He said a major police operation in Kempton Park and surrounding areas is set to begin on Thursday morning. Authorities also offered a R400,000 reward for information linking to the deaths of eight women found across Ekurhuleni.
