Family Identifies Body of Missing Kempton Park Runner Elizabeth Moselakgomo at Germiston Mortuary

GAUTENG — The family of 38-year-old Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo has positively identified her remains at the Germiston Mortuary, confirming the worst fears of those who had been searching for the Kempton Park runner since her disappearance last week.

Moselakgomo was last seen leaving for a run at approximately 18:00 before she failed to return home. Her body was among four discovered along the R21 highway, bearing signs of bruising and found partially unclothed. One of the bodies had been wearing workout gear, which had intensified fears that it belonged to her.

Acting Commissioner vows justice for victims

Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, expressed condolences to the Moselakgomo family and pledged that investigators would pursue every available lead.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Elizabeth during this extremely painful time. The loss of a loved one under such circumstances is devastating, Lieutenant General Dimpane said.

SAPS said that they would do everything within its powers to establish exactly what happened to Elizabeth and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

She also confirmed that a multidisciplinary team of detectives and specialised policing units had been directed to intensify the investigation. The team is working continuously to determine the circumstances of each death, analyse available evidence, and establish whether the cases are linked.

Fifth body discovered as investigation widens

The confirmation of Moselakgomo's identity came on the same day that a fifth body was found in Gauteng, as investigators continue examining a series of deaths involving women in the Kempton Park area.

One suspect has already been arrested in connection with the first body discovered in July and remains in custody.

Lieutenant General Dimpane reiterated that the SAPS would not stop until those responsible face prosecution.

"We will not rest until we have established the truth. Where there is evidence linking individuals to these crimes, we will pursue them relentlessly and ensure that they face the full might of the law," she said.

Criminologist weighs in on possibility of a serial killer

Previously, Briefly News reported that criminologist Professor Nirmala Gopal says the pattern of killings involving four women in Kempton Park is consistent with the work of a single perpetrator, even as police urge caution against drawing premature conclusions. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Gopal said profiling principles point toward one individual. She said from a profiling perspective, the similarities, the location and the fact that they are all women, had marks on their bodies and they were half naked demonstrate the hallmarks of a single perpetrator.
