MPUMALANGA — Taxi leader Joe "Ferrari" Sibanyoni and three co-defendants saw their money-laundering and extortion proceedings adjourned to 20 April 2027, following a short appearance at the Delmas Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. Less than a month before, he ended his testimony at the Madlanga Commission with unusual parting words.

According to SABC News, Sibanyoni stood before the bench alongside Philemon Msiza, Daniel Masilela, and Oupa Bafana Sindane. With prosecutors asking for more time to progress inquiries, the matter was deferred by six months, and the magistrate instructed that the complete case docket be handed over when the trial reconvenes in April.

Nature of the allegations

Prosecutors maintain that the quartet coerced a road-building contractor, Tengane Thomas Ntuli, into paying upwards of R2 million through extortion related to a construction tender. Specifically, Sindane is accused of threatening to halt the infrastructure project if Ntuli refused to pay. All four individuals maintain their freedom after posting bail set at R70,000 each.

Intimidation claims and defense objections

During the session, the prosecuting authority notified the magistrate of threats received in connection with the litigation. He was also accused of witness tampering, and National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago later discussed these threats during an interview on 702's Drive with John Perlman.

Legal counsel challenged the prosecution's delay request. Representing Sibanyoni, Advocate Shaun Abrahams urged the court to designate the postponement as final regarding ongoing investigations, pointing out earlier grievances regarding the absence of a completed charge sheet from the State.

Procedural background

The legal journey has faced prior setbacks, having been initially removed from the roll in Kwaggafontein before being reinstated at the Delmas court. The defendants are scheduled to reappear on 20 April 2027, by which point the State must make the docket available.
