JOHANNESBURG — Self-proclaimed political fixer Brown Mogotsi will return to court on 13 November 2026, after Friday's hearing of his application to compel the state to hand over additional documents was postponed to allow the prosecution time to prepare its response. This comes as Mogotsi was denied bail four times recently.

TimesLIVE reported that Mogotsi appeared before the Johannesburg Regional Court facing charges of perjury, defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and discharging a firearm in a public place. The charges arise from allegations that he orchestrated a fake assassination attempt against himself in Vosloorus in November 2025.

Mogotsi's defence demands key documents

His legal team filed an application for further particulars ahead of trial, requesting cellphone records belonging to state witnesses, their employment records and proof of residence, unredacted versions of witness statements, and still images extracted from video footage of the alleged shooting. The application also seeks identifying details of witnesses whose personal information was removed from disclosed documents on security grounds.

The defence argued that withholding these records could infringe Mogotsi's constitutional right to a fair trial, maintaining that the material is essential to evaluate the credibility of state witnesses.

The prosecution indicated it had not yet had sufficient time to formulate a response to the application, prompting the postponement.

Court signals frustration over delays

The presiding officer expressed dissatisfaction with the repeated postponements in the matter and underscored that both parties must exchange relevant documents without further unnecessary delays. The court directed the prosecution to furnish its formal response at least two days before the 13 November hearing, giving the defence adequate time to consider the state's position before the matter is argued.
