GAUTENG — Brown Mogotsi has once again left social media users amused and confused with his antics in court.
The North West businessman returned to the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on 1 October 2026 for the setting of a trial date. Mogotsi faces serious charges, including perjury, discharging a firearm, and defeating the ends of justice. Prosecutors allege he orchestrated a staged assassination attempt on himself.

During a brief appearance, both parties agreed to 7 October as the next court date. A notice presented to the court had been amended from an earlier date to reflect the new scheduling agreement.

Mogotsi again steals the show

The case has drawn repeated public attention since his arrest on 15 May 2026. During a bail hearing, prosecutors revealed that Mogotsi allegedly offered a cash bribe to the investigating officer shortly after being taken into custody, purportedly to secure his release and obstruct forensic checks on firearms and ballistics.
Prosecutors also disclosed an alleged escape plan. According to a Department of Correctional Services report submitted to court, Mogotsi reportedly intended to obtain an official prison warden uniform to walk out of the court holding cells undetected.
His defence team's arguments at one stage also included allegations of a personal vendetta by the investigating officer.
