GAUTENG – The Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court has heard how Brown Mogotsi attempted to escape custody using a correctional service officer’s uniform.

The information was disclosed by the State during the North West businessman’s latest bail application on Tuesday, 25 August 2026. Mogotsi was arrested in May 2026 in connection with a shooting in November 2025.

The political fixer claimed that he survived an assassination attempt, but prosecutors allege that he fired 11 rounds into his own stationary, unoccupied vehicle in Vosloorus. He faces charges of perjury, defeating or obstructing the ends of justice, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and discharging a firearm in a public place.

Prosecutors oppose Mogotsi’s bail application

Prosecutors presented the escape plot as a central argument against granting Mogotsi’s latest bid for bail. Prosecutors explained that Mogotsi planned to dress as a prison official and slip out of the court cells undetected on 20 August 2026.

The defence countered that the fourth application is founded on new facts and should be considered on its own merits. Mogotsi has had three previous bail applications denied.

Courts denied bail on grounds including flight risk, questions about the reliability of addresses provided, and allegations that Mogotsi attempted to intimidate witnesses and even bribe an investigating officer. The firearm connected to the Vosloorus incident has also been linked to other serious crimes.

The outcome of the fourth bail application had not been determined at the time of publication.
