GAUTENG — The High Court removed an application by former police general Mulangi Mphego to invalidate a July search of his Centurion home from the court roll. The ruling followed legal actions challenging the SAPS National Cold Case Unit search after he was arrested over a week ago.
According to eNCA, Mphego argued in court documents that the execution of the search warrant violated his constitutional rights and demanded the return of seized firearms, legal documentation, and his mobile telephone. The court struck the matter off the roll without granting the requested relief, leaving the police seizure intact.
Mulangi Mphego loses search challenge
The raid connected to an ongoing probe into the July 2021 death of former deputy national police commissioner Sindile Mfazi. Mfazi was initially reported to have died from complications related to COVID-19, but investigators launched a fresh inquiry after family members raised suspicions regarding the circumstances of his passing. National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the SAPS Cold Case Unit received specific directives from the former national commissioner to investigate the matter.
