South Africa's Wednesday weather forecast paints a tale of two climates. While Gauteng bakes under intense summer heat, the Western Cape braces for forceful maritime winds — and the contrast could not be more dramatic.

Gauteng heats up with extreme UV conditions

Pretoria is expected to reach a scorching 32°C on Wednesday, with Johannesburg close behind at 30°C. Both cities will experience largely dry, hazy skies and light breezes of up to 32km/h. Overnight temperatures will offer little relief, dropping to only 14°C to 15°C before the heat builds again.

The most pressing concern according to SAWS report, for Gauteng residents is the UV index, which is forecast to hit an extreme reading of 12. Health authorities warn that anyone spending extended time outdoors without sun protection risks serious sunburn, dehydration, and heat exhaustion. Daily commuters and outdoor workers in urban areas face the highest exposure risk.

Looking further through the week, the warm conditions are set to persist across the northern and central interior, with daytime highs ranging between 31°C and 34°C and overnight lows staying between 14°C and 18°C.

Cape Town's "Cape Doctor" blows in

Cape Town tells a very different story. While temperatures will peak at a mild 24°C under a mix of sunshine and cloud, the real weather feature is wind. Strong southerly gusts are forecast to reach up to 50km/h through the afternoon and evening, driven by the seasonal southeastern winds locals know as the Cape Doctor.

The coastal UV index sits at a very high 10, but the persistent breeze will keep temperatures moderate, with the night cooling to around 15°C and no rain expected.

Those powerful gusts carry serious secondary risks. Fire danger is elevated across the arid coastal brushland, and marine traffic, harbour operations, and coastal aviation may all face disruption throughout the day.

Rain and winds for the eastern regions

Beyond Gauteng and Cape Town, South Africa's eastern regions are in for a wetter week. Widespread rain is expected along the Eastern Cape coast and stretching into KwaZulu-Natal, accompanied by strong winds of up to 35km/h. Limpopo and Mpumalanga are also set to see isolated showers alongside otherwise warm daytime conditions.
