South Africans are bracing for a chaotic mix of extreme weather conditions across multiple provinces, ranging from torrential downpours to the risk of fast-spreading veldfires. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) cautioned that severe thunderstorms are set to hammer the eastern seaboard, packing destructive hail, lightning, and strong winds. Meanwhile, hot and gusty conditions across the interior have placed disaster teams on high alert for fast-spreading veldfires.

Severe storms and flash flooding threaten coastal provinces

Residents in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape have been advised to exercise extreme caution as heavy downpours threaten to trigger localised flooding and structural damage. In a detailed weather bulletin released by The Citizen, forecasters highlighted that violent storms accompanied by hail and intense lightning could compromise low-lying infrastructure, informal settlements, and daily transport services in vulnerable areas.

High fire danger and dust storms batter the interior

Further inland, dry and blustery conditions are driving up the risk of runaway veldfires across North West, Limpopo, the Free State, and sections of the Northern Cape. Gale-force winds tearing through the western Free State and eastern Northern Cape are also expected to trigger blinding dust storms and fell trees, posing serious hazards for motorists navigating major regional routes.

According to extended forecast models published on Time and Date, Cape Town can expect mild, overcast conditions with pleasant daytime highs around 20°C (68°F), gradually warming into the mid-to-high 20s as clear skies take over later in the week.
