Gayton McKenzie has opened up about one of the most frightening moments his family faced when his son Cruz was still a baby. With his child fighting a serious medical battle in ICU, McKenzie recalled the chilling warning doctors gave him and his family — words that left them fearing the worst.
Writing on Facebook on Thursday, 13 August 2026, McKenzie said Cruz had several medical problems when he was born and spent a long period in ICU.
“We literally lived at the hospital,” McKenzie wrote. “The Doctors called me one side and said I should prepare my family for the worst.”

McKenzie said his mother encouraged the family to continue praying despite the situation. He recalled her saying:

“We would pray without stopping,” he wrote.
McKenzie said Cruz was eventually discharged and described him today as a bright teenager, football player and “such a joy”.
McKenzie shares message with parents
McKenzie said he shared the story after speaking to parents with a sick child in hospital.
“I told them not to give up and to pray for absolute healing,” he wrote.
He said he hoped the experience would encourage someone facing a similarly difficult situation.
