Philip Henning To Lead South Africa in Crucial Davis Cup Battle Against Bosnia and Herzegovina

Philip Henning will lead the Renault SA Davis Cup team against Bosnia and Herzegovina at Irene Country Club in Pretoria on 19 and 20 September 2026. Tennis South Africa (TSA) confirmed that captain Pietie Norval has selected Henning, Khololwam Montsi, Alec Beckley and Thando Longwe-Smit for the World Group II tie.
The stakes are significant. Victory would send South Africa into the 2027 Davis Cup World Group I Play-offs, putting them one step closer to the higher tier of the international team competition.
Defeat, however, would send South Africa into the 2027 World Group II Play-offs, meaning the team would have to fight again to retain its place in World Group II.
February comeback gives South Africa confidence
South Africa will return to Irene Country Club after producing a dramatic 3-2 comeback against Montenegro in February.

The hosts began the second day level at 1-1 before Montenegro won the doubles rubber to move 2-1 ahead. Henning then defeated Petar Jovanovic 6-3, 6-2 to level the tie again.
That left Beckley needing to win the deciding rubber. He recovered from 5-2 down in the opening set against Aleksa Krivokapic before completing a 7-6, 6-3 victory.
Tennis South Africa described the result as a hard-fought comeback, while News24 called Henning and Beckley the heroes of the 3-2 win.
Longwe-Smit was also involved, partnering Henning in the doubles.

Henning and Montsi bring strong form
Henning enters the tie after winning the M25 Idanha-a-Nova title in Portugal. TSA says he reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 250 in June.
Montsi has also enjoyed an encouraging period. The 24-year-old won back-to-back M15 singles titles at Curro Hillcrest in July, defeating Devin Badenhorst in the first final before beating Israel's Ofek Shimanov in the second.
Montsi also has previous experience against Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was part of the South African team that travelled to Zenica for the nations' last meeting in March 2020, when the hosts won 3-1.
Bosnia and Herzegovina hold ranking advantage
Bosnia and Herzegovina are ranked No. 39 in the Davis Cup Nations Rankings, compared with South Africa at No. 58.
Beckley returns after his decisive February performance and also won the M15 Gaborone title in May. Longwe-Smit adds further experience after competing at World Tennis Tour and ATP Challenger level during 2026.
Norval said:
"This is an important tie for us. We know the challenge that Bosnia and Herzegovina will bring, but we have home advantage and a team that is hungry to perform."
He added:
"We want to prepare as well as possible, be ready for every moment and give ourselves the best chance of winning."
South Africa therefore has a clear target in Pretoria: win and advance towards World Group I, or face another fight to remain in World Group II.
Bafana Bafana face Egypt in October friendly
Briefly News also reported that Bafana Bafana are set for an international friendly against Egypt in Cairo in October 2026.
The fixture will provide South Africa with another opportunity to test itself against strong African opposition, with the match forming part of the national team's upcoming international programme.
