The fundraising campaign for slain Kempton Park runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo has surged past its original target, with South Africans coming together to support her eight-year-old daughter and the family she left behind.
The authorised BackaBuddy campaign had raised R84,533 by Wednesday morning, 16 September 2026, after being launched on Monday with a target of R50,000, eNCA reported.
Elizabeth Moselakgomo fundraiser surpasses R50,000 target
Moselakgomo, 38, went missing after leaving home for a run last week. Her family later positively identified her body at the Germiston mortuary on Monday, 14 September.

The fundraising organisers said the appeal was created to help the family through the difficult weeks and months ahead, particularly with the needs of her young daughter.
“We may not have known Elizabeth personally, but sometimes a story touches you and you simply want to help,” the organisers said.
They added:
“No donation can undo what has happened, but together we can help carry a small part of the burden this family now faces.”
The campaign's rapid growth means it has already raised more than R34,000 above its original target.
Running community rallies around Moselakgomo’s family
Moselakgomo’s death has resonated deeply within the running community, with fellow athletes and organisations paying tribute to the 38-year-old.
Team Vitality described her as a passionate runner and a valued member of its community. The club noted that she had taken part in several Vitality events and had recently completed the Wanderers 21km.
Discovery Vitality CEO Dinesh Govender also confirmed that the company would support Moselakgomo’s family financially. He said the organisation’s thoughts were with her daughter, relatives and members of Team Vitality who had known her through running.
Tributes have also taken a more active form, with runners organising memorial runs in her honour. The events have provided an opportunity to remember Moselakgomo, show solidarity with her family, and highlight concerns about the safety of women who run outdoors.
Support grows after tragic Kempton Park death
Moselakgomo’s death is being investigated alongside the deaths of other women whose bodies have been discovered in Ekurhuleni in recent months. Eight women’s deaths are under investigation following another body being discovered in Olifantsfontein on 15 September.
For Moselakgomo’s family, however, the immediate focus remains on her daughter and those closest to her.
The fundraising campaign’s response shows how people who did not personally know the runner nevertheless chose to contribute during the family’s time of grief.

SAPS reward offered as Ekurhuleni murders investigation continues
