Graeme Smith Issues Warning to Proteas Ahead of Australia Showdown

SOUTH AFRICA — Former Proteas captain Graeme Smith has cautioned South Africa's senior batters to expect a targeted approach from Australia ahead of the highly anticipated home tour, which begins in Durban on 24 September 2025.

Speaking to IOL, Smith outlined what he believes will be Australia's tactical blueprint going into the three-ODI and three-Test series.

"Their nature is always to focus on the most experienced players — the top players. If they can keep them under control, they feel that exposes the youngsters a bit more," he said.

Rabada doubt puts bowling unit under pressure

A significant concern hanging over the Proteas' preparation is the fitness of pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada, who has already been ruled out of the ODI leg of the tour and remains uncertain for the Test series.

Smith pointed to Marco Jansen as a player who would need to shoulder greater responsibility in Rabada's absence.

"Someone like Marco Jansen is such a key player — a crucial all-rounder for us," he noted.

He added that spinner Keshav Maharaj would also carry considerable weight.

"He's been integral in allowing Temba [Bavuma] as captain to be a bit more exploratory in other areas. He holds the game together and gets key wickets."

Batting unit faces the real test

With modern Test pitches frequently producing results well inside five days, Smith turned his attention to whether South Africa's batting order could post competitive totals consistently. He singled out skipper Temba Bavuma as a cornerstone but questioned whether the players around him could deliver when it mattered most.

"Can Aiden [Markram], [Ryan] Rickelton, and the like get the runs that are going to be required? There's enough firepower with the ball; it's always that batting unit. Can they post totals that are competitive?" Smith said.

South Africa enter the series as heavy favourites on home soil, though Smith acknowledged that this rivalry rarely follows a predictable script. The first Test is scheduled to get under way in Durban on 9 October.
