Mamelodi Sundowns have agreed to a €1.5 million fee with Danish Superliga club FC Copenhagen for the transfer of winger Thapelo Maseko, with only personal terms remaining before the deal is sealed.

The 22-year-old has spent much of the past season on the periphery at Sundowns, spending the campaign on loan at Cypriot club AEL Limassol. His performances there caught the attention of former Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos, who called Maseko up for South Africa's 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

The Bafana Bafana star is also being linked with a possible move to Kaizer Chiefs with the Glamour Boys reportedly interested in bringing him to Naturena.

Maseko shines at the World Cup

Maseko featured in three of Bafana's four group stage matches and delivered the decisive moment of their campaign, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory over South Korea. That result sent South Africa into the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the country's history.

Despite that breakthrough on the international stage, Maseko found no pathway back into Sundowns' first-team plans following the tournament.

The Premier Soccer League champions moved to find a permanent destination for the winger, and Copenhagen emerged as the frontrunners.

Copenhagen close in on Maseko deal

FC Copenhagen, who have prior ties to South African football through former Bafana Bafana striker Sibusiso Zuma, formalised their interest by reaching a €1.5 million club-to-club agreement with Sundowns.

Personal terms between Maseko and the Danish club are yet to be finalised, though sources indicate the remaining negotiations are not expected to present a significant obstacle.
