Football analyst Ero Samson has raised concerns about the South African Football Association's decision to appoint Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana head coach, arguing the move was premature and potentially disruptive ahead of a major tournament.

SAFA confirmed Mosimane's appointment earlier this week as the replacement for Hugo Broos, who departed following his tenure that culminated in South Africa qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States. The appointment marks Mosimane's second spell in charge of the national team, having previously taken over after the 2010 World Cup. The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach is widely regarded as one of Africa's most decorated football managers.
**Samson Questions SAFA's Timing and Process**
In an exclusive interview with Briefly News, Samson offered a nuanced but critical assessment of the decision. He acknowledged Mosimane's credentials but questioned whether this was the right moment to bring him in.
"Let me start with the fact that Pitso Mosimane is a good coach and a great manager, but I think he should be considered for the job after the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations," Samson said.

The analyst also questioned why SAFA overlooked Helman Mhkalele, who served under Broos and helped implement the tactical system that defined the Belgian's successful five-year tenure.
"I don't know why SAFA didn't consider Helman Mhkalele as Broos' replacement. He was part of the good foundation the Belgian coach laid, and should've given a shot for continuity sake," Samson said. "He understands the approach Broos laid that has been working for like five years now and he also worked with the Junior side."
**Concerns Over AFCON Preparation Time**
Samson's central concern relates to the compressed timeline Mosimane faces before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. He noted that even Broos required considerable time to instil his philosophy and achieve results with the squad.
"Pitso will come with fresh ideas, and he might not have much time to effect his changes and tactics with the team before the AFCON kicks off. Even Broos needed time for him to achieve his goal," Samson said.
Despite his reservations, Samson closed on a hopeful note. "I hope I'm wrong because I want African coaches to be successful and Pitso is one of the coaches I love," he added.
