In a statement published on 17 September 2026, the PSL confirmed that a minute of silence will be held before kickoff at all Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship fixtures, beginning that evening and running through the full weekend schedule.

PSL joins national outcry over GBV crisis
The tribute comes after the discovery of nine women's bodies in the Ekurhuleni and Kempton Park areas over the past two months, prompting widespread grief and demands for action across the country. A government-led memorial was held in Ekurhuleni on 17 September 2026 to honour the victims alongside families and community members.
The league expressed its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, stating that it was "deeply saddened by the violent crimes that have been reported in recent times, as well as those that may have gone unreported." The PSL added that it hoped justice would be served.
The football body also made clear that the silence was not limited to confirmed cases, acknowledging that many incidents of violence against women go unreported in South Africa.

South Africa has long struggled with one of the world's highest rates of femicide. The recent killings in Ekurhuleni have intensified public pressure on law enforcement and government to act decisively. Earlier in September 2026, runners across Gauteng took to the streets dressed in black to honour one of the victims, Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, as the Ekurhuleni investigation widened.
