The Franschhoek community is mourning the death of Zaine August, a 29-year-old rugby player who was fatally stabbed on Sunday, 9 August 2025, at approximately 20:30 at a premises in Langrug.

Franschhoek police opened a murder case and swiftly arrested a 24-year-old suspect in connection with the killing. The accused appeared before the Franschhoek Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 11 August, facing a charge of murder.

Police cite argument as likely motive

Captain FC van Wyk, spokesperson for the Franschhoek police, confirmed that the incident is believed to have stemmed from an argument between the parties involved.

Zaine's family was contacted for comment but was reportedly too grief-stricken to speak to the media at the time.

Dennegeur RFC Pays Tribute

Dennegeur RFC, the club where Zaine was an active player, shared a heartfelt tribute on their Facebook page following the news of his death.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Zaine August. Zaine's dedication and energy that he brought to the club will be deeply remembered and missed," the club wrote.

The tribute continued:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and everyone who knew Zaine. May God give you the strength to get through this difficult time."

The club added that while Zaine may no longer be with them, he would never leave their hearts.
