Andre Esterhuizen's appointment as Hollywoodbets Sharks captain for their United Rugby Championship fixture against defending champions Leinster has drawn fresh attention to the controversy surrounding his recent elevation to the Springbok captaincy.

Anele Mdoda row returns to the spotlight

The announcement triggered an immediate response on social media, with one comment cutting straight to the ongoing public debate.

Mdoda's criticism came in the wake of renewed scrutiny over a 2012 racial-slur incident involving Esterhuizen, who was a teenager at the time. The disciplinary process that followed resulted in a suspension, with conditions. Esterhuizen has previously disputed aspects of the account surrounding the incident.

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus had defended the decision to hand Esterhuizen the Springbok captaincy, citing his leadership role with the Sharks and his broader contribution to the squad. South Africa went on to lose 42-38 to Australia in Perth.

Fans react to team announcement

Not all responses to the Sharks' announcement were tied to the captaincy controversy. Several supporters expressed enthusiasm about the selection.

"Very exciting Sharks team!!!! Can't wait to be back in Durban to watch them," one fan wrote.

Another added:

"Strong lineup 💪🏽 let's get the bonus point win boys!"

There was also sympathy for winger Janco Purchase, who was left out of the matchday squad despite a strong showing in the previous match.

"I feel for Janco Purchase who has dropped out of the team completely following an impressive performance last week," one supporter noted.

Eben Etzebeth, meanwhile, was named among the replacements, with at least one fan joking that the veteran lock would pick up an injury ahead of the November internationals.
