Nigerian Ex-Carer Jailed for 8 Years After Robbing Elderly and Vulnerable People in UK

LIVERPOOL — A Nigerian former carer has been sentenced to eight years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court after carrying out a string of burglary and robbery offences against elderly and vulnerable people, including individuals he had previously looked after professionally.
According to Peoples Gazette, Ediongseyene Essien, 32, was sentenced on Friday. Merseyside Police confirmed he received three years for burglary and five years for robbery, with both terms to run consecutively. As a Nigerian national, Essien will be deported upon completing 30% of his sentence.
Suspended carer struck the following day
Essien's employers suspended him on 9 March following allegations of theft. Within 24 hours, he committed four separate offences across the L6 area of Liverpool, several of them against people who had previously been in his care.

His first act was stealing a bank card from a vulnerable blind man and using it to make multiple transactions at nearby locations. He then entered the bedroom of an elderly resident at a separate address, though police found no evidence that anything was taken during that visit. Later the same evening, at around 7.30pm, Essien broke into the home of a severely disabled person. Again, no items were confirmed stolen.
The most serious incident occurred at approximately 9pm, when Essien smashed through the rear patio door of an elderly couple's home. The couple witnessed him walk into their living room and take a wallet containing cash.

Detective condemns betrayal of vulnerable victims
Detective Inspector Kevin O'Rourke of Merseyside Police said the nature of Essien's previous employment made his conduct especially troubling.
"Essien committed a series of reprehensible burglary and robbery offences against people he had previously cared for, and other vulnerable victims," O'Rourke said.
He added that it was difficult to comprehend how someone in a caring profession could go on to deliberately target the very people once placed under his protection. O'Rourke noted that the victims experienced significant distress as a direct result of the crimes, and thanked them for cooperating with the investigation.

The trio were found dead in Bedfordshire in early July 2026, with authorities confirming that Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma had allegedly fled to Zimbabwe. He was later aprehended in Johannesburg where he stood trial in two charges before being extradicted to the UK. after he fled the United Kingdom following the murders.
