Legendary movie star Denzel Washington has been named an honorary Sergeant Major by the US Army.

The Hollywood icon was given the title during the Annual Association of the U.S. Army conference on Monday, November 15, Task and Purpose reports.

The actor was recognised for his work in association with the Fisher Foundation.

Denzel partnered with them to build houses at military medical centres so the loved ones of soldiers receiving treatment could be near them.

While presenting the award to Denzel, Sergeant Major Michael Grinston said the movie star epitomised all the qualities they were looking for in this year honouree.

“When I looked at him, and when I looked at the role of the sergeant major of the Army, we want those that are humble because we serve the soldiers of the United States of America, and I represent all the soldiers in the Army.

And when I talk to him, that’s what he represents. He just wants to do better for the Army,” he said.

Speaking at the ceremony, the foundation’s CEO said he first met Denzel 20 years ago, and when he learned about their mission, he wrote them a cheque on the spot.

“Nobody deserves this more than you do. You have been an amazing friend to military families throughout your work with us,” he said.

Denzel's fire incident

In other news, Briefly News reported that firefighters responded to reports of smoke at Denzel’s house in November 2020.

The fire crews shared that there were no flames visible when they got to the Beverly Crest mansion. However, authorities shared that smoke could be seen coming from the second floor of the multi-level home.

According to authorities, the smoke on the second floor was determined to be from one of several furnaces in the home that was recently serviced and was taken offline.
