Thailand Cuts Visa-Free Stay for South Africans in September 2026

South Africans planning a trip to Thailand need to take note of a significant change to the country's entry rules. From 15 September 2026, the visa-free stay period for South African passport holders will be cut from 60 days to 30 days.
Thailand published the updated regulations, with South Africa among 60 countries and territories affected by the revision.
Travellers who enter Thailand on or before 14 September 2026 will still receive the full 60-day allowance upon arrival. Anyone crossing the border from 15 September onward will be granted only 30 days.
Why Thailand is changing the rules
The Thai government made the decision following an internal policy review. Officials were concerned about the misuse of visa-free access, which included cases of illegal employment, nominee business arrangements, and links to transnational crime. The revised framework is intended to refocus the exemption strictly on tourism.

The update also introduces new limits for those entering through land borders. From September, visa-exempt travellers from most affected nationalities, including South Africans, will be restricted to two land border entries per calendar year. There are no equivalent caps for air travel entries, though immigration officials retain full discretion over who is admitted.
How to stay longer than 30 days
South Africans who need more time in the country do have options. Those already in Thailand on the 30-day exemption can apply for a one-time extension of up to 30 additional days through a local Thai immigration office, subject to approval.
Travellers who know in advance that they will need a longer or multi-entry stay should apply for a formal tourist visa before leaving South Africa. Applications can be submitted through the official Thai e-Visa portal ahead of departure, which guarantees the extended period without relying on an in-country extension.
