Alberton gas pipeline catches fire: Several nearby families evacuated

Citizens have been evacuated after a gas pipeline caught fire in the Ekurhuleni region.

News24 reports that those within a 500-metre radius were forced to leave the scene when the fire broke out.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services Management spokesperson Eric Maloka says that the fire department had been on the scene in a flash.

The fast reaction ensured that no injuries or fatalities occurred, with emergency personnel working to extinguish a second fire that broke out nearby.

Briefly.co.za gathered that the pipeline was initially thought to be a Sasol pipeline, but a spokesperson has confirmed otherwise. It is now suspected that the pipeline is part of a Transnet network.
