Jub Jub’s Lawyer Says Criminal Case Is Taking a Heavy Toll on His Career and Mental Health

Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye's legal team is fighting back, insisting the Uyajola 9/9 presenter is innocent while sounding the alarm about how the ongoing criminal matter is affecting both his livelihood and mental state.

The media personality was back in court on Monday at the Germiston Magistrate's Court, where his lawyer, Henry Motsemme, painted a picture of a man struggling under the weight of public scrutiny and legal pressure.

Motsemme told the court that Maarohanye was finding it increasingly difficult to keep his career afloat since the case emerged.

"He can't get [as much] work as he used to. It's a big problem for him," Motsemme said.

The lawyer also spoke to Maarohanye's emotional state, saying his client felt deeply frustrated that the allegations kept resurfacing whenever he tried to move forward.

"He feels very sad that such things keep coming up when he's doing all he can to try and be a productive member of society," Motsemme said.

Motsemme was equally firm in dismissing the charges themselves.

"He didn't kidnap anyone, he didn't fire anything at anyone," he said, adding that he was confident the court would ultimately exonerate his client.

"Eventually the court will clear him; he will be cleared," Motsemme said.

What Jub Jub's case is about

The charges stem from an alleged confrontation with an e-hailing driver in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni, on 14 June. Maarohanye allegedly approached the driver after accusing him of having a romantic involvement with his girlfriend. The situation reportedly escalated when the driver was allegedly forced into Maarohanye's vehicle and prevented from leaving, with a firearm allegedly discharged in his direction. The driver was uninjured and subsequently reported the incident to police.

The National Prosecuting Authority previously confirmed that a pellet gun was recovered from Maarohanye's home during the investigation.

Maarohanye currently faces charges relating to possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an offence and pointing an object capable of leading someone to believe it was a real firearm. Earlier charges, including kidnapping, unlawful discharge of a firearm and defeating the ends of justice, were part of the initial case.

The State informed the court that its investigations were now complete and that it was prepared to proceed. The matter was postponed to 17 September.
