Stellenbosch farmer's wife arrested after evading police for 4 days

- The wife of a farmer who was murdered in 2019 has been arrested in connection with her husband's killing

Zurenah Smit, the wife of slain farmer Stefan Smit, has been arrested after she handed herself to the police on Monday. She reported to the police station after she was flanked by her lawyers. She is being held at the station and this makes her the third suspect in connection with her husband's murder, which happened over a year ago.

Stefan Smit had been murdered in a house robbery in June 2019, he was shot in his head and upper body and died from his injuries. The robbery took place while his wife was having dinner with a family friend. They were not harmed in the process of the robbery.

The culprits got away with a handbag and two cellphones, making it past all the security measures in place in the household.

The police had been looking for Zurenah Smit but could not find her anywhere. They had also gone looking for her at a relative's residence.

According to her legal team:

"Zurenah Smit did not expect to be arrested this morning. She arrived at the Stellenbosch police station this morning with the expectation that her bail application would be heard in the Magistrate's Court today."

Zurenah did not inherit anything from her husband's estate following his death. He had changed his will in 2018. His daughters from his first marriage inherited investments worth millions of rand.

Sredojevic is currently heading the Zambian national team had been in the region as part of a scouting programme with the U20 Zambian team. Kick-Off reported that the National Prosecuting Authority had issued a statement confirming the 51-year-old's arrest.
