Somizi Mhlongo and the broadcaster MultiChoice have been issued summons to court by Hastings Moeng.

Moeng claims that his intellectual property was stolen from him when Mhlongo launched the popular Dinner at Somizi‘s show.

According to Moeng, he came up with the concept in 2014 and told Somizi about it via email. Somizi never responded to the mail but then appeared with a similar concept in 2020.

“Somizi Mhlongo, Barleader TV & Multichoice have had summons served TODAY on behalf of Hastings Moeng seeking "reasonable compensation" plus "15% interest" as the alleged originator of the concept Dinner With Somizi.
Moeng wants the court to declare his verbal contract as valid & binding (supported by email evidence that it exists); wants the court to declare the concept underpinning Somizi's show as Moeng's brainchild & wants the court to direct "reasonable compensation" to be given to Moeng plus rights to contract future seasons etc”

Social media users weighed in with their thoughts on the summons. Twitter user Mac46664 said:

“Hastings must also claims a portion from the profits of the “Dinner at Somizi’s” book... because, it’s selling all because of his (Hastings) brainchild”

“How can a cooking show be the brainchild of someone else? If so, Hastings must sue Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, Ruben Riffel...all of them!”

“Somizi messed up by trying to explain thus giving more ammo to the guys lawyers, now they’ve a winnable case thanks to his rumbling trying to explain without consulting a lawyer first coz he thought it’s gonna be expensive”

Meanwhile, Briefly.co.za previously reported that Somizi is off to his holiday home and told his followers so in a social media post that was accompanied by a selfie.

The media personality posted a pic where he is wearing a bucket hat and sunglasses while sitting in the seat of a car.

The pic was presumably on the journey as Somizi was travelling to his destination.

Somgaga also took the opportunity to implore Mzansi to stay safe over the last few days of 2020.
