Jostina Sangweni has raised concerns about the mental health of people after she was accused of witchcraft and burnt alive. Sangweni was a sufferer of schizophrenia, a mental health disorder that affects a person's ability to feel, behave and think clearly.
Sangweni was set alight and rushed to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The CRL Rights Commission has now confirmed that it would be conducting an investigation into Sangweni's murder.
Authorities have pleaded with members of the community to come forward with any information they have relating to the brutal murder of 59-year-old Sangweni.
Speaking to eNCA, CRL Rights Commission Chairperson Prof Luka David Mosoma stated that Sangweni died for no reason. Mosoma pleaded with South Africans to not treat anyone the way Sangweni was.
He stated that there are many women and men who are suffering as Sangweni did. Mosoma added that the people who are facing these battles need help and that others need to lend a hand where they can.
JacarandaFM reported that after the video of Sangweni went viral and police managed to rescue her before her untimely passing, two suspects were arrested. The suspects aged 27 and 28 years old are expected to make their first court appearance on Monday, 12 April at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.
In other news, Briefly News recently reported on a wheelchair-bound KZN farmer who was found dead in his bedroom. Neil McKay was left disabled after being shot in a farm attack around 20 years ago. His body was recently found with strangulation marks around his neck with his hands tied in another alleged farm attack.
Reports say that the attackers who had crippled McKay had never faced justice for their crimes. According to DA MP Alf Lees, McKay was a "gentle and friendly" man who did not own a firearm even though he lived alone on a farm.
McKay was just 46 years old at the time of his death. Reports say that McKay's elderly mother found him early on Saturday morning in his bedroom.
