According to the actress, Kuli's Honours research at the University of Cape Town focused on Lady Anne Barnard's letters, examining the gossip and social scandals Barnard recorded while living and travelling in the Cape.

"One of my favourite pieces of Kuli's lore is that her Honours research at UCT was on Lady Anne Barnard's letters, studying the gossip and scandals Barnard recorded while living and travelling in the Cape. There's something wonderfully full-circle about studying a woman documenting Cape society through letters, observation and gossip, and then building a career doing her own distinctly South African version of social commentary centuries later."
The actress also acknowledged that while Roberts' commentary could be polarising, it carried real cultural weight. She added:
"Kuli's commentary could be controversial and sometimes genuinely contentious, but it also functioned as a kind of vernacular social archive. Her Sunday World work became significant enough to be examined academically in work on post-apartheid race and representation at UCT."
