Reality TV star Beverly "Bev" Steyn broke down in tears in a raw, selfie-style Instagram video on Thursday, 17 September 2026, opening up about her fear of leaving home and pushing back against critics who accused her of targeting President Cyril Ramaphosa because of race. The emotional clip, filmed indoors against a backdrop of a large potted palm plant near a bright window, struck a nerve with South Africans grappling with a devastating wave of gender-based violence.
Bev's video followed news that nine bodies of women had been discovered across Ekurhuleni since July 2026, a grim toll that has left many women across the country feeling deeply unsafe.
Bev says fear is stopping her from travelling
In the clip, Bev told viewers she had been hesitant to book flights to Johannesburg to celebrate a close friend's upcoming engagement.

"When I cannot leave my home or feel I don't want to get on a plane to go to Joburg because one of my best friends is getting married, then it's a problem," she said, visibly distressed.
She explained that the backlash that pushed her to film the video came after she reposted someone's story expressing frustration with the president. Critics accused her of raising the issue because he is Black. Bev was firm in her response:
"It's got nothing to do with colour."
The star went further, saying she was exhausted by how race is used to silence women speaking about safety.
"Underneath the skin, which I wish I could rip off because I don't want to be white anymore, I don't want to be anything. We're all the same, and we all want the same thing," she said. She called colour "a bs" construct used by governments to create division and hatred.
