Influencer Rachel John broke her silence on the string of femicides gripping the Ekurhuleni area east of Johannesburg. The 25-year-old took to Instagram Stories on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, to address the killings and shine a light on South Africa's worsening gender-based violence (GBV) crisis.
John, who is based in Amsterdam, makes frequent trips to South Africa. She used her platform to brief her international following on what has been unfolding in the country. Her post formed part of a wave of reshared Stories raising awareness about the femicide crisis.
The killings that shook the country
Between 15 July and 15 September 2026, Gauteng police recovered bodies of mostly half-naked women in the Kempton Park area alone. By 17 September, a ninth victim had been found, her body wrapped in a sheet on the roadside in Dawn Park, Ekurhuleni. Investigators were still working to establish her identity and the circumstances of her death.

One case that gripped the nation was that of Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, a 38-year-old runner from Rhodesfield, Kempton Park. She vanished after heading out for a jog and was later found dead, sending a chilling reminder that even the most ordinary activities have become dangerous for women in the area.

Rachel, who has been linked romantically to Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, used her page to give context to followers who may not have been following the situation closely.
"For those of you who don't live in South Africa, let me update you on a serious problem happening here. South Africa is facing a major crisis of gender-based violence and femicide. Over the past two months, the bodies of eight women have been found in the Ekurhuleni area, east of Johannesburg. Several were found with signs of violence. One of the women, 38-year-old Elizabeth Tsontso Moselakgomo, went missing after leaving home for a run. Her body was found days later."
She went on to speak directly to the fear that ordinary women carry every day, from something as simple as going for a morning run.
"What really breaks my heart is that this is part of a much bigger problem. Women shouldn't have to live in fear of being the next victim. Women should be able to live their lives freely and feel safe."
Her post drew attention to how deeply the killings have unsettled communities across the country, with women increasingly unable to carry out everyday activities without looking over their shoulders.
