South African Anglers Turn to Temu for Affordable Gear as Fly-Fishing Season Peaks

As South Africa moves through the final stretch of Autumn, a season widely considered as one of the country’s primetime for fly-fishing, more outdoor enthusiasts are looking for affordable ways to enjoy the sport without compromising on quality. Cooler conditions and active trout waters continue attracting both seasoned fishermen and newcomers alike, with online fishing communities such as Facebook groups also seeing growing conversations around catches, gear recommendations, and fishing destinations.

At the same time, the rising cost of specialist equipment remains a barrier for many hobbyists looking to fully participate in the sport.

For Brenden Roberts, a 31-year-old content creator and entrepreneur from Centurion, fly-fishing has been part of his life since childhood. Having started fishing at the age of six, Roberts says the sport’s appeal lies in both the outdoors and the variety of techniques and experiences it offers.

However, like many South African hobbyists, upgrading equipment and sourcing quality fly-fishing gear often came at a significant cost.

After discovering Temu through social media and recommendations from friends and family, Roberts decided to test whether more affordable gear options could still deliver on quality and performance. As someone who also creates lifestyle and outdoor content online, he saw the opportunity to review the experience for his audience.

Following price comparisons with local online retailers and physical stores, Roberts purchased a range of fly-fishing essentials including a reel, flies, chest pack, fly box, net, magnetic release, fishing shirt, tippet holder, floatant caddy, line clipper, and hook release for under R2,000 in total.

According to Roberts, a single premium reel from a specialist retailer could have cost more than his entire order combined.

He said the quality met and in some cases exceeded his expectations, particularly items such as the flies, bag, and tippet holder.

Roberts later shared an unboxing video of the gear on TikTok, where it attracted more than 33,000 views from fishing and outdoor enthusiasts interested in affordable alternatives for the sport. He says the response online has been overwhelmingly positive, with followers frequently asking about the products and some even purchasing the same gear themselves.

His experience reflects a broader consumer trend in South Africa, where shoppers are increasingly prioritising affordability and value when purchasing online. A News24 survey conducted following Temu’s local launch in early 2024 found that 81% of respondents cited affordability as the platform’s main attraction, while nearly half said they had saved more than 50% of their usual shopping budget.

Similar trends are also emerging internationally. In Germany, recreational angler Benedikt Hofacker, a 34-year-old school social worker from North Rhine-Westphalia, said lower-cost fishing gear allowed him to spend more time on the water without worrying about constantly replacing expensive lures and hooks. Meanwhile in Sweden, outdoor content creator Jonas Andersson has spoken about using affordable online gear options to support his growing camping and fishing content across YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.

For Roberts, accessible pricing is also helping make fly-fishing feel less intimidating for newcomers wanting to explore the sport.

“A lot more people want to try outdoor hobbies now, especially when they see them on social media, but the cost can sometimes hold them back,” he said.

As more South Africans embrace outdoor activities and creators continue showcasing hobbies like fly-fishing online, affordable gear options are helping lower the barrier to entry for a sport traditionally seen as expensive and niche.
